Intravenous Therapy, often abbreviated as IV Therapy, is a medical technique that delivers fluids, blood, or medication directly into a patient’s circulatory system through a vein.
This method bypasses the digestive system, allowing for immediate absorption and effect. It is commonly used in hospitals, emergency care, or critical care situations where immediate treatment is required.
The substances used in IV therapy can range from saline solutions for rehydration, to chemotherapeutic drugs for cancer treatment.
The Basic Intravenous Therapy or IVT Training is based on the guidelines of Infusion Nursing Society and Center for Disease Control. The IVT Training teaches the participants to insert a catheter into the vein, starting an Intravenous infusion, calculation and regulation, and roles and responsibilities of an IV therapist.
The IVT Training will also give you a background on how are you going to administer medications and contrast media. Managements and interventions will be also tackled in this training.
IVT Training holds paramount importance for nurses for several reasons. Firstly, it equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge to administer IV therapy safely, effectively minimizing the risk of complications.
This training enables nurses to understand the intricacies of the human venous system, learn correct methods of vein puncture and cannulation, and recognize potential adverse reactions.
Secondly, IVT training ensures the nurse’s competency in handling various substances that are administered intravenously such as fluids, medications, or nutritional supplements and understanding their effects on the patient’s body.
Moreover, IV therapy is often a critical component of a patient’s treatment plan. Therefore, a nurse proficient in IV therapy can significantly contribute to improving patient outcomes, reducing recovery times, and enhancing the overall quality of care provided.
Lastly, obtaining IVT training and licensure not only increases a nurse’s skill set but also expands their career opportunities within the healthcare sector. It’s an essential component of professional growth and recognition in the nursing field.
