HABC Level 2 International Award In Pool Lifeguarding Qualification (PLQ)
HSS Philippines’ Pool Lifeguard Training is based on the HABC Level 2 International Award in Pool Lifeguarding. This lifeguard training is for those learners wishing to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become a trained and qualified pool lifeguard.
This qualification allows successful learners to operate as a qualified pool lifeguard for 2 years.
This qualification is usually obtained by taking a 2.5-day classroom based course.
This qualification is assessed by Practical Observation and Open response Assessment
HABC Level 2 PLQ Training Approach
The delivery of the qualification is the responsibility of the nominated tutor. This person should meet the associated criteria within the qualification specification and have the relevant skills, experience and qualifications.
The qualification has a duration of 20 hours (16 delivery), which is equivalent to approximately a 2.5 day programme. Delivery can be made up of lectures, tutorials, supervised study and assessment.
Pool Lifeguard Training qualification is assessed by the following methods:
- Practical Observation
- Open Response Assessment Learners must provide a short response to questions across the breadth of the course. In order to pass this assessment, learners must achieve a score of 20 from 30 questions.
The first day of the Pool Lifeguard Training will be the concept on Emergency First Aid Training.
Learners must demonstrate competency in the following:
- Primary survey – DRSABC
- Secondary assessment – Head to Toe
- Recovery position
- Demonstrate CPR* – Adult Sudden Collapse
- Demonstrate CPR* – Drowning
- Demonstrate CPR* – Spinal Injury
- Demonstrate CPR* – Child
- Demonstrate CPR* – Infant
- Choking
- Major Bleed Control
- Management for Shock
- Small cuts, grazes and bruises
- Minor burns and scalds
- Small splinters *CPR assessments must be completed over a period of two minutes
Pool Lifeguard Training Content
Training and assessment for the NPLQ is in three sections and all must be successfully passed to attain the NPLQ.
- Section 1 – The Lifeguard and the Law, Swimming Pool Supervision
- Section 2 – Intervention and Rescue and Emergency Action Plans
- Section 3 – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, AED, and First Aid
Pool Lifeguard Training Assessment
The assessment of the Pool Lifeguard Training is the responsibility of the nominated assessor. This person should meet the associated criteria within the qualification specification and have the relevant skills, experience and qualifications.
HSS Philippines has worked with Pool Lifeguard Training subject matter experts to create a streamlined and effective assessment pack which includes assessment support materials for both the theoretical and practical assessments.
HABC has a system that will support centers in populating center and candidate details at the point of course and candidate registration, and which will help save you time when completing the assessment paperwork.
HABC Level 2 PLQ Awards Validity Period
The validity period of the award is two years from the date of the assessment.

II. Pool Life Guard
- Timed Swim
- Practical rescue-Immediate response
- Towing and Return to Poolside, or Progressive Rescue
- Recovering a submersible manikin from the bottom of the pool
- Vertical Lift with either 2 or 3 lifeguards assisting in the lift
- Casualty extraction- assisted step-out
- Vice grip turn of a spinally injured casualty in deep water and trawl for 5 meters
- Arm splint rollover of a spinally injured casualty in standing depth water
- Application of the rescue board, either from an arm splint rollover or a vice grip turn and trawl
- Action for Vomit
- CPR
